Using a Nautical Theme in Decorating Your Home

By Jessica Page

There are a lot of ideas that you can think of with regards to decorating your home based on a nautical theme. One way is to use wainscoting which has a dark stain for your wall's lower part and a chair rail to make it look like the interior (wood) of a marine vehicle. This makes you feel like you're inside a huge sailing boat. This design is pretty impressive and luxurious since it can cost you a lot more than you expected. Nevertheless, the results are enough to stun anyone who gets inside the finished room.

Another great idea is to use a marine shade of blue for curtains and window coverings and have them made of the same type of materials that sail covers are made of on a sailboat. If you are truly ambitious you could elect to paint the walls in this marine shade of blue and select another color for the curtains or wooden blinds instead. However, white walls are perfectly acceptable when it comes to creating the look and feel of the interior of a boat.

Rope is another great tool to use in order to make the nautical theme a bit more authentic. You can twine rope around picture frames, candleholders, and all manner of other things in order to incorporate the rope into the room without having it look out of place. If you are truly ambitious you could even string a hammock in some forgotten corner of the room in order to hold coats in the wintertime or merely to authenticate the theme to some degree.

Barometers, clock and other similar items can make a nautical theme more realistic. You can also add sea paintings, boat models, sand dollars and seashells to the room if you want to. A room like this gives us a great sense of home, inspiration and connection with our very own and beloved Mother Earth.

A nautical room is basically incomplete when it doesn't have a lighthouse to serve as a guide for tired sailors. Don't ever forget to include this item in your list when you go out shopping for your nautical items. If you have no idea as to where you can find such thing and how you would put it in a single room, you can consider the works of an artist called Thomas Kincaid. He was given the title "Painter of Light" and his works are completely incomparable with other artists when it comes to lighthouses. A single painting from him would certainly be a great treat for your nautical room.

Everyone has the capacity to decorate an interior having a nautical theme as long as he/she desires it. Bottom line is that it's not the top item in the list of most luxurious themes but it can't be found at the bottom as well. Nevertheless, a nautical theme is perfect for someone who has unlimited creative ideas because of its almost boundless nature. You can easily acquire the marine atmosphere that you want with the right materials and concept in your possession.
