Release Emery

By Castulo Zane

Marc Emery is doing time in the US. His crime was selling marijuana seeds online from Canada to the States. He was charged by the US government along with two of his employees. Because he agreed to take the whole rap and didn't fight extradition his employees were let go.

Emery has been a marijuana activist for years. He's been active in civic politics. He's run a successful retail business in Vancouver, both for online sales and over the counter sales. He has never hidden his activities, always paid his taxes and employed many people.

It is not surprising to me that someone took offense to his attitude and decided to make an example of him. Such is the world. Power is sometimes exercised for less than honorable reasons. He is an outspoken activist who fell afoul of American power.

American power can be used in mysterious ways. Federally they are very anti-marijuana. On a state level they are much more tolerant. You could say that the country is a bit bit of a legal self contradiction.

Barack Obama introduced a program called "We The People". This program allows for petitioners to request pardons for imprisoned people like Marc. In his case they have the 5,000 signatures needed, but want more. They reached the required number in 9 days.

More signatures help. Demonstrate your support by signing the petition. Google "Petition to Free Marc Emery" and you'll be taken to the White House page.

"We The People" is a chance to express the democratic will. Take advantage of it. Don't let bureaucrats decide what is right or wrong. The war on drugs has failed, and it has cost millions of dollars and ruined many lives.

Anti-Marijuana forces like to claim that marijuana is evil. There is little evidence to support this claim. There is, however, lots of evidence to suggest that alcohol, tobacco and legal pharmaceutical drugs kill people everyday. Just look at the grocery store newstand and remember Heath Ledger, Micheal Jackson and Amy Winehouse. Why go after marijuana?
