Some Important Tips When Looking At Aquaponics Design

By Dennis Paker

Aquaponics design can come in many different varieties each tailored to meet the needs of the individual. When deciding to plan your own there are some important steps that can make it a lot easier. Following these critical tips can help you get the right one working in your home quickly and easily.

Aquaponics simply refers to the symbiotic relationship one can attain through the correct blending of plant life and aquatic life. The proper combination allows for a constantly cleaned and easily maintained garden where key plants can grow and thrive. The most important part of any garden such as this is the zero use of any chemicals to clean or maintain the water. When a properly cycled garden is working correctly it has crystal clear water and will require zero chemicals to clean it.

Depending on your experience of lack of experience your choice will come down to a premade kit that contains everything you need to get up and running quickly. On the other hand you can buy a minimalist kit that only offers the bare essentials. A complete kit is the best starting point for someone with limited space or someone with their first garden.

This type of growing require both fish and plants to work in harmony for the garden to grow properly. In this case purchase the fish and plants that work best together. Fish need to be able to handle recirculating water pumps, as well as minor imbalances in pH and oxygen levels. In this type of garden Trout, Perch and Tilapia are most often used.

Tilapia has proven over time to be the best kind of fish for this garden. Tilapia can thrive easily in a tank with recirculating water as well as minor changes in oxygen, pH and temperature. This species of fish have proven over time to be the best solution for this kind of garden.

More experienced growers will want to keep an eye on their component levels. These levels are a ratio between the amount of water used in the tank to the type of plants grown. Early growers believed a one to one ratio was best but current growers prefer a one to two ratio all the up to a one to four ratio. This ratio can be changed by simply changing the amount of water in the tank, or changing the kind of rocks used in the water tank to simply choosing a different amount of growing medium.

Aquaponics design can be elaborate as you like or as simple as you like. There are kits for any experience level, choose a complete kit if your new or have limited space. When deciding on your fish and plants keep them both in mind. This is a symbiotic relationship and that balance must be maintained. Tweak to component ratio to best suit your current set up.
