Step-To-Step Guide To Growing Your Own Bonsai Tree

By Claude Bethwood

A Bonsai tree comes from Japan and is a way of making a tree and other plants very small. This has become a popular practice in the west in the past years. Bonsai trees are small so they are easy to enjoy inside and outside in a small living space. They look great in big spaces too, but are made for the tinier, more compact Japanese living spaces. As you read the guides written by The Bonsai Tree Gardener Blog, bonsai trees require patience, energy, and dedication to keeping the plant as healthy as can be. In order to grow a bonsai tree you will need bonsai wire, small weights, and some garden strong.

Step One - Bonsai Tree Type

The first thing you are going to do is find the exact plant that you want. You can choose an indoor plant or an outdoor plant. Something you might want to consider is choosing a plant that you find interesting because it is going to take a while to grow and you want to stay interested in it. Some interesting plants include jade trees, maple and juniper trees, weeping figs, Chinese elms, and Natal plums.

Step Two - Bonsai Tree Style

Next, Figure out how you want your plant to look. Try looking through pictures of bonsai plants in books and on the Internet to see the various shapes that others shape their trees and plants into. You will need to choose whether you want your tree to be straight or slant or curve or weep.

Step Three - Bonsai Tools & Wire

Once you have decided what shape you want your bonsai tree to be in you need to get some wire and put the wire all around the tree. It should be wrapped around the tree at about a 45 degree angle. Once done with this, bend the branch or branches into the shape that you want them to be.

Step Four - Bonsai Wire & Technique

Once the branch is in the shape you want it to be, tie it down. If for some reason you do not want to use wire, you can use garden string. Pull the string around the branch until the branch is in the angle that you want and then tie the string to a stake in the ground near the plant.

Step Five - Weights

Finally, you are going to want to hang weights from the branches. Weights are said to make the branches train slower, but the effects are going to be forever lasting. You can also consider using some type of string and tying small weights to all of the trees branches. These can be purchased from any supplier of bonsai suppliers or you can consider using nuts tied onto strings to give them the branches that they need. One nut threaded through the string to achieve the amount of weight that you desire.
