Knit Fabrics And Their Uses

By Amy Farrell

Knit fabrics are a popular material, used in a of ways. While frequently produced for clothing, they have other commercial uses as well. Knit fabrics have a degree of stretchability and is commonly used in socks and other clothing products that need to be a little stretchy.

While the elasticity of the material depends on the material the knit is made from, they can stretch one or two hundred times the original size and go back to the original shape. Over the course of time knit fabrics usually lose their elasticity, but will provide the wearer use for many years. Knitting fibers is generally done by a machine today, although some people enjoy the habit of making their own socks or sweaters. The two basic kinds of knitting the following.

The first kind is cable knitting. Anyone who saw a cable knitted sweater can imagine how this material looks. It tends to be less flexible, since the stitches are under a certain amount of tension. Cable knitting works very well when the knit fabric needs to keep its shape, which makes it a favored style for sweaters and other garments.

The second kind of knitting is lace knitting. A far more flexible fabric, the knitting is much looser, permitting the material to stretch. Knitted fabrics are generally used in winter wear as they have a tendency to be warm and comfortable. Traditionally, knit fabrics were made of wool, a fiber that may retain heat even when wet, making it a popular choice.

Today, knitted fabric is made of a wide range of materials, even synthetics, which make it a less insulating fabric, but far easier to produce on a larger scale. Learning the way to knit is a valuable ability and a favourite pastime for many of us young and old. Knit fabrics are a great way to remain warm in the winter months.
